In a blow to its competitors, Waterford Demons Rugby League Football Club is set to become even more dominant on the football field.
Construction has started on the club’s new facility at Noffke Farm Park, on Armstrong Road in Meadowbrook.
The $1.8 project is jointly funded by Logan City Council and the Queensland
Government.
The new clubhouse includes a clubroom, a gymnasium, a canteen, an office and spectator facilities.
City of Logan Mayor Darren Power said the recent 2021 City of Logan Sports Awards highlighted how local sport is thriving at both elite and recreational levels.
“Our athletes continue to succeed on local, national and international stages,” Cr Power said.
“Facilities like those we are building for the Waterford Demons help provide opportunities for youngsters to become the sporting superstars of tomorrow while also providing a wonderful training and competition venue for recreational athletes.”
City Lifestyle Chair Councillor Laurie Koranski said the development of modern, purpose-built sporting facilities was a priority for Council.
“We are committed to providing facilities for our community to enjoy a wide range of sports so as many people as possible can stay fit and healthy and enjoy their weekend competitions,” Councillor Koranski said.
Division 6 Councillor Tony Hall said new facilities would help Waterford Demons build on their existing base as a strong, competitive and growing club.
“With more than 700 members, I can’t wait to see the Demons reach another level of success as they benefit from these new facilities,” Councillor Hall said.
Waterford MP Shannon Fentiman said the new facility would encourage community sport.
“Right across the state we are building facilities that encourage greater participation in sport, especially among girls, who now have clear development pathways and female-only teams from the junior ranks right through to elite level,” Minister Fentiman said.
“The current Demon’s clubhouse, gym and amenities will be demolished to make way for a brand-new set-up that makes the playing, refereeing and volunteering experience better for everyone.”
The new clubhouse is expected to be complete in mid-2022, weather permitting.
Logan City Council has recently completed a lighting upgrade at Noffke Farm Park through its Active Logan, Active Spaces funding program, as well as a new driveway entrance and carpark, funded through the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.
The upgrade to the Waterford Demons clubhouse will be delivered as part of the Active Logan Strategy, which outlines Council’s vision for an active and healthy community.
