Volunteers Shine A Light On Albert River Improving Ecosystem One Bug At A Time!
Volunteers in waders, brandishing nets, descended into the Albert River at Cedar Creek last weekend in search of waterbugs. Waterbugs are hidden creatures that play a huge role in the health of freshwater ecosystems.
Researchers are hoping to find samples rich with waterbugs, a vital food source for platypus, turtles and other aquatic animals, in the Albert River.
Divisional Councillor Laurie Koranski thanked the volunteers for the valuable role they are playing in helping shine a light on the Albert River ecosystem.
“Council has been working hard to improve our waterways through our community led Albert River Vision and our waterways and wetlands recovery plan” Cr Koranski said.
“We know the Albert River is home to many iconic species, including platypus, who enjoy a hearty feed of water bugs”.
“We hope the samples will reveal a river teeming with waterbugs” she said.
The program is funded by Logan City Council and facilitated by Watergum.
